After the application gateway determines the backend server, it opens a new TCP session with the backend server based on HTTP settings. This load balances the requests on the servers. The major difference is in the way they handle information. If the backend pool contains multiple servers, the application gateway uses a round-robin algorithm to route the requests between healthy servers. The user contacts the gateway using a TCP/IP. Application level gateways, also known as proxies, are outwardly similar in operation to circuit level gateways in that they act as the only entrance into or out of a protected network and deny all non-requested data from outside. Since it monitors information at the application level, it is also known as application firewall.
